Self-compassion means remaining kind and understanding to ourselves in the face of our faults, rather than judging ourselves harshly or criticizing ourselves harshly for all perceived shortcomings. Who ever said that we have to be perfect? We can, of course, try to change ourselves or our behavior. With self-compassion, however, it is because we care about ourselves, not because we are unacceptable and worthless as we are now. To have compassion for oneself is to accept and appreciate one’s humanity. Things do not always work out the way we would like them to. We experience frustration and loss, we make mistakes, we reach our limits and fall short of our ideals. That is simply human nature.
