What is cytomegalovirus (CMV)?

Cytomegalovirus (CMV, also known as human herpesvirus 5) is a widespread virus in the herpes family. Most people become infected with it at some point in their lives—often as early as childhood. In healthy people, the infection usually goes unnoticed or causes only mild flu-like symptoms such as fatigue, fever, or a sore throat.
