REF – Reflux

The term reflux refers to the reflux of the acidic stomach contents into the esophagus. A reflux disease is a condition in which either symptoms occur or the mucous membrane of the oesophagus changes. The technical term for the esophagus is esophagus. If the mucous membrane of the esophagus inflames due to irritation by aggressive gastric acid, doctors speak of reflux esophagitis. The stomach produces hydrochloric acid to digest food components and kill pathogens. If the muscle at the end of the esophagus does not close the stomach entrance sufficiently, acid stomach contents can rise into the esophagus.
