The human hormone system has the task of controlling the formation of hormones via regulatory circuits. Hormones regulate, for example, growth and development, electrolyte and water balance, heat balance and cell metabolism. Appetite and hunger, the sleep-wake rhythm, blood pressure and blood volume are also controlled by the endocrine system. Without the endocrine system, therefore, virtually nothing in the body functions.

Disorders of the endocrine system can have a wide variety of causes. For example, the function of an endocrine gland can be impaired by inflammation, tumors, malformations, injuries or medication. As a result, the gland produces too little or too much hormone, which can have far-reaching consequences.
