Adenosintriphosphate, or ATP, is a chemical molecule that provides energy in every cell of a living being. This energy enables all work processes such as locomotion or material transport.
Similarly, ATP is involved in blood flow regulation and mediation of inflammatory responses.
In the cells, the mitochondria, ATP is split into ADP (adenosine diphosphate) with the help of enzymes, releasing energy. Energy that is needed for everything in us to function – for example, muscle contraction.
ATP synthase is thus an energy converter that transforms one form of energy into another. The enzyme plays a central role in the metabolism of almost all known organisms, since ATP is required continuously as an energy transmitter.
