In so-called Hashimoto‘s thyroiditis, the thyroid gland is chronically inflamed. The cause is an autoimmune reaction. It often results in the gland no longer producing enough hormones. At the beginning of the disease, hyperthyroidism is temporarily possible due to the inflammation.
