The abducens nerve is the VIth cranial nerve. It contains somatoefferent fibers and motorically innervates only the rectus lateralis muscle. Thus, it is involved in controlling the directional movements of the eyeball.
Of all the ocular muscular nerves, it has the longest extradural course.
