The paired vestibulocochlear nerve is the 8th cranial nerve. It conducts electrical impulses coming from the inner hair cells to the brainstem to the auditory pathway as well as impulses from the sensory cells of the vestibular organ to the central vestibular nuclei. In addition, it carries efferent fibers that modulate the outer hair cells.
Failure of the vestibulocochlear nerve results in deafness and balance disorders.
The chip serves to stabilize the 8th cranial nerve N. vestibulocochlearis and to support it with all its functions.
