AMD (Age-related macular degeneration) is the most common eye disease in the Western world, causing severe vision loss in people over the age of 50. It affects the macula, which is the site of sharpest vision in the retina, the site of discerning vision. Everything we look at directly is mapped there. The visual cells outside the macula and in the periphery of the retina are used for orienting vision, so that AMD patients can still find their way around their surroundings relatively well.
The chip contains information that is intended to support sharp and recognizing vision.
