In every living cell, metabolic and energy metabolic processes take place. Photosynthesis, respiration, alcoholic fermentation, and lactic acid fermentation are among the metabolic and energy processes.

Metabolism and energy metabolism is the uptake of substances and energy into the cells, the conversion of substances and energy in the cells, and the release of substances and energy from the cells. In the cells, endogenous organic substances are constantly built up (assimilation) and organic substances are broken down to make use of the chemical energy they contain (dissimilation).

The chip is designed to support the build-up as well as the breakdown of organic substances in and out of the cells.
