A tremor is an involuntary, rhythmic shaking of the muscles. It can have various causes, including excitement, cold, neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, nerve damage or medication. Tremor often occurs in the hands and arms, but can also affect other parts of the body. There are different types of tremor, such as essential tremor, which often occurs without a known cause, and resting tremor, which occurs in movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
Symptoms of tremor include rhythmic shaking of the hands, arms, head, legs or trunk. Other signs may include a shaky voice, difficulty writing or drawing and problems holding and controlling objects such as cutlery. A tremor can be triggered or exacerbated by stress or strong emotions.
The causes of tremor can be varied. Common causes are neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or stroke. Nerve damage, hyperthyroidism, liver failure and certain medications can also trigger tremor.
Essential tremor often occurs without a known cause, but can be genetic. Other triggers can be stress, anxiety, cold or exhaustion.
