What is a chronic ENT inflammation?

Most commonly, this refers to a chronic inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses (chronic rhinosinusitis). The mucous membranes in the nose and sinuses have been inflamed for more than 12 weeks and do not heal properly.

Physical level (somatic):

• The nose is often blocked.
• Mucus is present (draining forward or into the throat).
• Feeling of pressure or pain in the face (forehead, cheeks).
• Sense of smell (and sometimes taste) is reduced.
• People often feel tired and exhausted.

Causes can include anatomical constrictions (e.g., a deviated nasal septum), allergies, asthma, recurrent infections, smoking, or a disturbed immune system. The inflammation is not caused solely by bacteria but is often a persistent inflammatory process of the mucous membrane.

Mental/emotional level (psychological): There is a clear connection between chronic inflammation and psychological stress:

• People with this condition more frequently have anxiety disorders and depression.
• Conversely, people with anxiety or depression have a higher risk of developing chronic rhinosinusitis.
• Chronic stress can weaken the immune system and promote or maintain inflammation.
• Many affected people experience the symptoms more intensely when they are emotionally stressed (this is called somatization).

From a psychosomatic perspective (i.e., the connection between body and mind), additional themes are often mentioned, for example:

• Suppressed emotions (anger, grief, frustration) that are not expressed.
• The feeling of “not being allowed to breathe properly or perceive clearly.”
• Self-pity, feelings of guilt, or holding on to old hurts.

These psychological factors are usually amplifiers, not the sole cause. The physical causes (mucous membrane, anatomy, allergies, etc.) remain important.

• “I am allowed to breathe freely and perceive clearly”
• “Stress and anxiety are allowed to dissolve”
• “More calm and self-compassion”
