What Are Antihistamines?

Antihistamines are medications that block the effects of the chemical histamine in the body. Histamine is released from mast cells, primarily during allergic reactions, and triggers typical symptoms such as itching, sneezing, a runny nose, watery eyes, skin rashes, or swelling.

There are two main groups:

H1 antihistamines: These are mainly used to treat allergies (e.g., hay fever, allergies to dust mites, animal dander, or insect venom).
