What is Polycythaemia vera?
Polycythaemia vera (PV) is a rare myeloproliferative disorder in which the bone marrow produces too many red blood cells (erythrocytes)—often accompanied by an increase in white blood cells and platelets. The cause is usually an acquired mutation in the JAK2 gene (most commonly JAK2 V617F). The blood becomes more viscous, which can increase the risk of circulatory disorders, thrombosis, and other complaints. Typical symptoms may include headaches, itching (especially after bathing), dizziness, redness, or a general feeling of unwellness. Standard medical treatment includes phlebotomy (bloodletting), low-dose aspirin, and, if necessary, cytoreductive medication.
