The human organism has complex self-regulation and repair processes. Homeostasis, immune response, tissue regeneration, and the activity of the autonomic nervous system are well described biologically. Chronic stress, persistent anxiety, pessimistic expectation patterns, and psychosocial strain can, however, dampen these processes — among other things via the stress axis (hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal), pro-inflammatory signaling pathways, and a shift toward sympathetic arousal.
